Scent + Art Festival 2027
The festival focuses on promoting experimentation that integrates scent into contemporary art, music, dance, performance, literature, science, and technology. It explores how smell interacts with other senses—sound, image, text, and movement—through cross-modal artistic practices.
A key emphasis of the festival 2027 is accessibility and inclusion, with a strong focus on creating multisensory experiences that are meaningful to visually impaired audiences. By prioritizing scent, sound, touch, and spatial perception over visual dominance, the festival opens alternative ways of experiencing, understanding, and engaging with art. We encourage stories that are about, or relevant to, visually impaired people.
The program investigates how sensory combinations—both harmonious and contrasting—can expand perception and deepen engagement. It also explores collective memory and identity as multisensory experiences shaped through scent and storytelling.
The festival invites artists, musicians, dancers, performance artists, writers, scientists, technologists, curators, galleries, and institutions to participate in the festival in person, remotely in Riga, or by organizing satellite events in your country.
The festival is not covering artistic fees or travel/accommodation costs, but it provides space and/or time for your contribution, and support letters for your local funding agencies. The Scent + Art Festival 2026 brought together more than 100 participants from 32 countries.
Key dates:
1. Application deadline: July 15, 2026
2. Online seminar/lecture on how to create meaningful experiences for visually impaired persons: August 16, 2026, 18:00 CET

UNM 2027: Call for Artists-in-Residence
UNM Iceland calls for artists who are 30 years old or younger and are citizens or residents of a Nordic or Baltic country. The call is open to any artist interested in participating in a residency to create a new work that will be premiered at the UNM festival in Akureyri, August 16th - 21st 2027.
This residency is aimed at composer-performers, artists who perform their own works. There is no criteria about artistic practices; artists who fit the aforementioned criteria and are interested in working in the context of music and sound are welcome to apply.
The selected artists will attend a 7-day residency in Listasmiðjan í Leifshúsum, from August 9th - 15th 2027. Two established artists will support the artists-in-residence as mentors/coaches. Each mentor brings their distinct artistic practice and experience. Selected artists will work with both mentors to realize their work. Residency artists are furthermore encouraged to collaborate with other artists-in-residence on their projects.
Listasmiðjan í Leifshúsum is an old farmhouse turned art and project space, focused on giving grassroots artists a space to be creative. It is located in Svalbarðsströnd, Eyjafjörður, only a short drive from Akureyri.
Theme: Rewilding The 2027 festival theme is Rewilding, centering around restoring natural, grassroots processes in art making. We want to de-emphasize the idea of structural systems around art-making and the artist, and instead reinforce a living ecosystem of artists. We want a scene where people support each other, are open to sharing their tools and findings, and celebrate with each other when they find something new and interesting. This, we believe, is what a healthy artistic community looks like, and this is what we want to foster at UNM.
Artists in recidence will be selected based on an anonymous motivation letter. Below is a description of the residency along with artistic statements from each mentor. Before submitting your application, it is important that you read the terms and conditions, found below.
About the mentors:
Berglind María Tómasdóttir is a flutist and a composer living in Reykjavík, Iceland. In her work she frequently explores identities, archetypes and music as a social phenomenon through different mediums. Berglind has worked with composers such as Björk, Anna Thorvaldsdóttir, Peter Ablinger and Carolyn Chen, and received commissions from Dark Music Days, the National Flute Association, Sequences Art Festival, Reykjavík Arts Festival and Nordic Music Days to name a few. Berglind is a professor at Iceland University of the Arts.
"I am very excited to be a part of this residency and meet and work with young composers from the Nordics and Baltics."
Diane Mahín is a Dutch-Iranian performance maker and sociologist. She makes performances in which sound and physicality are the driving forces. Diane scrutinizes the human body as a material object in order to dissect social constructions. Her works focus on bodysounds (guts, growls, cries, breaths) which she uses to create performative codes shaped by the learned behaviors of an unbearable society.
"My performative worlds lay bare the destruction, absurdity, wildness, and the (loss of) control of the human condition, and search for movement within this collapsing reality."
Terms & Conditions
-
Applicants are individual artists, not collectives.
-
Applicants must be born on or after January 1st, 1996, and/or be full-time students in music or arts at the time of application, provided they do not already hold a master's degree in music or arts.
-
Applicants must be citizens or residents of any of the participating UNM countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway or Sweden.
-
Applicants will send a detailed, anonymous statement of intent describing their work, methods and how they wish to work during the residency, as well as personal details which will only be seen by the boards of UNM and used for administrative purposes.
-
All work samples must be anonymous. Please ensure that names, dedications and names of musicians/performers (i.e. personal information) are removed from all scores, videos/media, etc. Don't forget copyright text and metadata. Various solutions to "hide" names in PDFs usually work poorly. As it is important that the name does not accidentally appear, we recommend editing the score, removing the name, and saving again as a PDF.
-
Applicants will be selected by a common jury for all participating countries, consisting of the residency mentors.
-
Applicants may send in one application.
-
Applicants may not have been featured in more than four UNM festivals before 2027.
-
One individual will be selected to represent each delegation of UNM, with the Baltics being one joint delegation.
-
The UNM festival has the power to enforce a gender quota. If the selection of artists made by the jury exceeds the total ratio of 2:1 between males and non-males, the festival organizers will select replacements based on the ranking of the jury.
-
Applicants can send in applications to both the Call for works and the Call for artists-in-residence, as long as the maximum number of works/applications does not exceed the limit for the country one applies with. If an applicant is selected from both calls, they may choose if they want to participate in the residency or with their selected work.
-
Selected applicants will travel to Svalbarðsströnd and stay in Listasmiðjan í Leifshúsum. Leifshús is an old farmhouse-turned-residency with a common sleeping (dormitory-like) and living area and kitchen, and shared workshop facilities. Participants are responsible for their own food and are encouraged to cook communal meals.
-
The cost of travel will be guaranteed by the UNM board that the selected artist represents. Accommodation will be covered by UNM Iceland.
-
UNM Iceland will not cover performance fees for composer-performers at the 2027 festival, consistent with the policy that other selected composers are not paid to participate in the festival. However, we will work to include an honorarium for all residency participants. Specifics will be clear at a later date.
-
By applying to this call you are agreeing to follow our Code of Conduct in any UNM related activity.
-
The application deadline is June 19th 2026 at 23:59 GMT.
UNM: Call for Works
The 2027 festival theme is Rewilding, centering around restoring natural, grassroots processes in art making.
Call for Works
This year, five works will be selected from each Nordic country (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland) and two from each Baltic country (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania). We encourage all creators working within the context of music to send in works; ensemble pieces, solo works, installations, audio-visual works, music-theatre, etc. Before submitting your application, it is important that you read the terms and conditions, found down below.
Terms & Conditions
1. Applicants must be born on or after 1 January 1996. Applicants must be Swedish citizens or residents of Sweden.
2. Applicants may participate in a total of five UNM festivals, regardless of which country they represent. If you have already been selected for UNM five times, you are no longer eligible to be selected again. If an applicant meets the eligibility criteria in two countries (e.g. is a Swedish citizen but lives in Denmark), they may only apply in one country; otherwise, both applications will be disqualified.
3. Applicants cannot be selected two years in a row. For example, you cannot be selected for the festival in Akureyri 2027 if you were selected for Copenhagen 2026.
4. All works must be submitted anonymously. Ensure that names, dedications, and names of musicians/performers (i.e. personal information) are removed from all scores, videos/media, etc. Do not forget copyright text and metadata. Different methods of “hiding” names in PDFs often do not work reliably. Since it is important that names do not appear by accident, we recommend editing the score, removing names, and saving it again as a PDF.
5. Applicants will submit personal information separately from the work itself. This information will only be used by UNM boards for administrative purposes. The information will be stored for up to two years and can be deleted at any time upon request by the applicant after the results have been announced.
6. Works are selected by a jury in each country. UNM Sweden is implementing a gender quota, meaning that the traditionally overrepresented group (cis men) may constitute a maximum of 50% of the selected works over time. At the festival in Copenhagen in 2026, 3 out of the 5 represented Swedish composers are cis-men. This means that a maximum of 2 works by cis-male composers may be selected for the Call for Works 2027. For more information on how each country applies the quota, please contact your national board.
7. Each applicant may submit a maximum of two applications – the Call for Works and the Call for Artist-in-Residence included. This means you may apply with up to two works (Call for Works), or one work (Call for Works) and one project (Call for Artist-in-Residence). If you are selected for both the residency and with a submitted work, you may choose whether to participate in the residency or with the selected work.
8. A total of five works will be selected in this Call for Works. In addition, a number of runner-up works will be selected. If the performance of a selected work is cancelled, a replacement work will be chosen from the runner-up list. Attendance throughout the entire festival week is expected from the composers selected to participate. The performance of a selected work may be cancelled if the selected composer is unable to attend the festival.
9. UNM verifies applicants’ eligibility and reviews the submitted materials via the application form before forwarding them to the jury. If necessary, UNM may ask applicants to complete or amend their application. It is the applicant’s responsibility to submit any requested changes or documents before the application deadline. After the application period has closed, applications cannot be amended or supplemented, so please submit your application in good time.
10. UNM Iceland is committed to producing a performance or exhibition of all selected works. However, as the festival is volunteer-run, resources and production capacity are limited. If a selected work exceeds the festival’s technical, logistical, or financial capacities, the composer may be asked to adapt the work so it can be presented within the available resources. For the 2027 festival, we can accommodate works for a sinfonietta.
11. UNM Iceland will not cover performance fees for composer-performers at the 2027 festival, consistent with the policy that other selected composers are not paid to participate in the festival.
12. By submitting your application, you confirm that you have read and agree to the terms and that you will follow our Code of Conduct in all UNM-related contexts.
13. The application deadline is June 19th 2026 23:59 CET. Works submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
For the application
Each work should be represented by two separate files:
- Sheet music or another graphical presentation of the work.
- Recording of the work. For traditionally notated music without a live recording, include an audio file (mock-up) from notation software (preferably using, for example, NotePerformer) or a DAW such as Logic or Cubase. Use compressed formats such as .MP3 or .MP4. Formats such as .WAV, .AIFF, .FLAC, and .MOV are not accepted.
PLEASE NOTE: The names of the files should ONLY be the TITLE of the work. Make sure the files are completely anonymised (see point 4 in terms and conditions).
If you have any questions regarding the application process or UNM, please do not hesitate to contact unm.sweden@ungnordiskmusik.com or any of the individual board members for more information.

Deadline: August 14th 2026
MENT Ljubljana is inviting artists, bands, solo performers, live acts and DJs with live experience and publicly accessible audio and video material to perform at its 13th edition.
MENT 2026 AFTERMOVIE
“MENT remains a rarity: a showcase festival curated so that whichever path you choose, every discovery feels like a win.” Antonio Poscic, The Wire
“Doesn’t feel like a typical showcase festival. It just feels like a real music lovers' festival. I think that’s the main thing with MENT. It’s about creating a healthy ecosystem with like minded people.” Bob Van Heur, Le Guess Who?
"There are festivals you attend, and there are those you organize your life around. MENT Ljubljana has belonged to the latter category for me for years."
Marija Todorović, Oblakoder
"MENT isn’t just a festival, it’s infrastructure for the future of independent culture."
Darek Mazzone, KEXP
MENT Ljubljana is a music discovery festival facilitating, in symbiosis with the conference, the presentation of music performers from all over Europe and beyond in front of international music professionals and audiences. The festival serves as a meeting point for artists, music professionals and music lovers.
IMPORTANT NOTES
We value thoughtful applications over sheer volume. Take a moment to explore MENT’s past and current programme, and ask yourself if your music resonates with the festival’s identity and audience.
We offer all performing artists a fee (based on a range of factors), as well as accommodation for foreign artists, basic backline, and festival catering.
The following questions help us get a clearer picture of your project and whether it fits MENT #13. Thanks for taking the time.
All applicants will be notified of the results via e-mail (check Spam folder) by December 18th 2026 the latest. But mainly in the September-December period.
