Printmaking as Language

Printmaking as Language focuses on printmaking as a contemporary artistic practice, with an emphasis on process, exchange, and circulation rather than on any single material or technique. It is intended as a space for artists working with printmaking, broadly defined, to explore how the medium functions today, conceptually and socially. The residency invites artists to approach printmaking as a shared language; a way of thinking, organising work, and engaging with others, within a shared working environment and a specific local context.

The residency brings together artists whose practices engage with printmaking in expanded, hybrid, or experimental ways, and who are interested in how the medium operates today in relation to authorship, repetition, translation, collaboration, and public engagement. Printmaking is approached not as a closed tradition, but as an adaptable practice shaped by context, process, and exchange.

Rambu’s printmaking workshop functions as both a production site and a space for collective inquiry. Equipped for screenprinting, lino, woodcut, and etching/drypoint, the workshop supports individual work while also encouraging shared use, informal knowledge exchange, and conversations that unfold through making. Technical expertise is available as support, while the emphasis is on artistic decision-making and process rather than instruction.

Alongside individual practice, the residency encourages forms of shared activity such as artist-led talks, workshops, or demonstrations, developed in dialogue with the residency group and the hosts. These moments may take place within the residency itself or extend outward to a local public, reflecting Rambu’s ongoing role as a place where artistic processes are visible and open to exchange.

A collaborative element forms part of the residency and is shaped through ongoing dialogue rather than predefined outcomes. This may result in a shared project, publication, or public presentation, and is intended to reflect the collective thinking and working methods that emerge during the residency. The form, scale, and timeline of this outcome remain flexible and responsive to the artists’ interests and processes.

This residency positions printmaking not as a fixed tradition, but as a living and adaptable practice — one that continues to offer relevant tools for artistic inquiry, collaboration, and communication and circulation today.

Land Art as Narrative

Land Art as Narrative is a site-specific artist residency developed by Tynset AiR in collaboration with Tynset municipality and Nord-Østerdal Friluftsråd (Nord-Østerdal Outdoor Recreation Council). The residency invites professional artists working with land art and site-specific practice to create works in close dialogue with near-nature landscapes, everyday use of nature, and place-based narratives that unfold through movement, encounter, and time. Near-nature is understood not as a backdrop for art, but as an active, lived environment shaped by care, repetition, and seasonal change.

The residency will be situated within a publicly accessible outdoor area in or around Tynset that is already used for walking and everyday recreation. Understanding how art operates within such a setting, alongside daily movement, rest, play, and shifting rhythms, and how works are experienced over time and through sequence, is central to the residency.

While the project draws inspiration from narrative traditions rooted in place, including folklore, artists are invited to approach these references critically, subtly, or abstractly. The residency is aimed at artists whose practices engage with landscape, material, ecology, or narrative in thoughtful and contemporary ways, and who are interested in how meaning can emerge through spatial experience rather than direct representation.

The residency places strong emphasis on responsible working methods and sensitivity to context. Artists are encouraged to work with reused or locally available materials where possible, and to engage with questions of impermanence, care, and ecological awareness. Access to reused materials through regional partners is planned, while final material frameworks will be shaped in relation to site conditions and artistic needs.

Public encounter is understood as an inherent quality of the works rather than a separate outcome. By situating art within everyday landscapes, the residency seeks to create situations of attention, reflection, or quiet disruption for a broad and varied public, without relying on formal mediation or instruction.

This residency is conceived as an open and adaptable model for professional land art practice, one that prioritises artistic integrity, dialogue with place, and long-term sustainability over fixed formats or predetermined outcomes.

Wood as Material | Forest as Practice

Wood as Material | Forest as Practice is a thematic, site-specific artist residency at Rambu and Fagertun, developed in close connection with the residency hosts' forest in Tylldalen. The residency invites professional artists to explore wood and forest as material, landscape, and field of practice through material-based and process-oriented artistic work.

Rooted in a rural inland context in eastern Norway, the residency operates at the intersection of contemporary artistic practice and local knowledge. It offers time and space for slow artistic immersion, production, and reflection, with a strong emphasis on place-specific inquiry, exchange, and public-facing processes.

Using wood as a shared thematic framework, the residency creates opportunities for dialogue between artists and local actors working with forestry, wood processing, craft, and cultural heritage. Encounters with forest owners, sawmills, craftspeople, and other knowledge holders form part of the programme and are invited in as contributions to the residency's wider conversations. At the same time, strong emphasis is placed on artistic autonomy, allowing each artist to define their own approach, methods, and outcomes.

The open call is directed at professional artists working with wood, forest, landscape, or related materials and themes, as well as artists engaged in material-based, site-specific, or process-driven practices who wish to explore these questions in dialogue with a new place and local context.

The residency runs for two months, from 17 April to 12 June 2026 and artists may choose to come for one month, or for the entire period. Fagertun serves as the artists' residence and shared social space, while Rambu functions as a production site, workshop, and arena for conversations and public activity. The hosts' forest in Tylldalen, approximately 30 km from Tynset, plays a central role as a site for exploration, work, and presentation.

The forest functions both as workspace and exhibition site. Situated along a well-used walking trail, it offers strong possibilities for low-threshold public engagement. Use of the forest and related logistics will be planned in dialogue with the artists to support both artistic processes and public-facing activity.

The residency concludes with a public presentation developed by the artists as part of their working process. This will take the form of a site-specific outdoor exhibition in the forest in Tylldalen, potentially combined with works or documentation shown at Rambu. The presentation may include temporary installations, interventions, or other artistic responses adapted to the landscape, and audiences will be invited to experience the works through a simple guided route. The final format will be shaped by the artists' processes and decisions during the residency.

Wood as Material | Forest as Practice further develops the Fagertun residency as a platform for material-based artistic practice rooted in place, contributing to professional artistic development in rural contexts.
