Shared/Connected Open Call
The New Wave of Photographic Talent
Emerging from the omnipresent culture of imagery, the new wave of photographic talent consists of true digital natives. They’ve grown up in a world where images reign supreme, and they play a pivotal role in capturing the essence of freedom, culture, human connection, and unity. This generation exemplifies the delicate balance between finding a genuine subjective perspective (ethics) and crafting the perfect visual expression (aesthetics). With insatiable curiosity and a thirst for innovation, they push the narrative and technical boundaries of photography to new heights.
At Rotterdam Photo, we are committed to empowering this intricate balancing act with a solid foundation—a theme broad enough to invite a myriad of independent photographers to join our festival, yet clear enough to provide visitors with a cohesive narrative that links the diverse issues raised by individual creators.
For the 2025 edition, our theme is Shared/Connected.
In the wake of half a century of neoliberalism, a new ideology is stirring: commonism. This movement challenges the relentless privatization and commercialization of shared resources and goods, as well as the enclosure of scientific knowledge and information. It stands against any form of hierarchical inequality or dominance of one group over another, offering an alternative to diluted notions of collectivism and social cooperation.
How much are we truly willing to share? And how can this be captured visually? Rotterdam Photo seeks to chart this new ideological landscape through the lens of contemporary photographers, while also embracing their critical perspectives on a utopian, commonistic society. Can we truly define a common good in an open society like ours, or is it just a superficial commitment?
The strong communal bonds of the past have been replaced by weak social connections, untethered from religious or socialist mandates. Yet, we now face the dystopian reality of ubiquitous connections, where for decades we’ve been compelled to share everything–particularly opinions and personal worldviews. The digital and logistical web we’ve woven is, in this sense, the sole authority that knows, organizes, and governs all.
What tools do we have now to live together meaningfully? How can this sense of connectedness be shared in a way that everyone values? What technological innovations will aid us in this quest?
These pressing questions resonate deeply with today’s visual artists and photographers, inspiring projects that explore (re)discovered family ties, identity issues, social and ecological engagement, and the role of artificial means in these endeavors. This has given rise to what seems to be a neo-existential movement in photography. It is precisely this movement that Rotterdam Photo seeks to highlight in this year’s Open Project Call.
Apply before December 20th and just us as we celebrate and scrutinize the intricate tapestry of connection and sharing through the visionary eyes of the new generation of photographers.

The league of stars
Our mission is to generate a context of education, research and training in the observation of stars, constellations and planets, in order to create a more direct relationship with the visible sky. We will have a transdisciplinary approach through the different historical, mythological, symbolic and philosophical visions of the sky, as well as fundamental astronomical knowledge.
Through the practice of the body in space and systematic orientation, we will seek to lay the foundations of new perceptions, in the learning of bodily experience. Ancient astronomical and contemporary astrological bases will help us to enrich our gaze and rethink our presence on earth.
The project is called The league of stars, emphasizing the meaning of the word “league” as “that which unites”, in this case with the stars. Proposing in first place an astrological retreat, a practice of leaving the usual parameters of time, daily life and obligations, to enter into a magical or sacred timeline determined by the rhythms of the sky. And secondly as an artistic residency, creating a proper context to research and stimulation in the transdisciplinary creative process. Anyone interested in making a creative process in relation to the sky can apply.
The Program
The program is divided into two parts: day and night.
During the day we’ll focus on individual processes, everyone can be free to organize their day as they like with the activities available: library and readings, walks, swimming, yoga, visiting sites, producing some kind of work, collecting materials, images, sounds, resting or whatever is part of the life practices of each participant.
Meals will be organized around common sharing. Breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner will be provided, with specificities in each case that may be required.
Optional activities: each participant can propose different daytime activities, practices or workshops according to their area of expertise. In this way, it’s possible for each participant to bring their uniqueness to nurture the intelligence of the group. These activities will be planned in advance and organized together when each group arrives at the house.
During the night we’ll focus on group activities through the training program and sky gazing. Each night after sunset we’ll have classes of approximately 3 hours with a focus on the visible bodies and constellations, the cardinal points and the understanding of space. Learning night by night to recognize the stars and grasp the magnitude of the constellations, with their myths, history and symbolism as well as logically follow the lunar phases.
Likewise, we’ll take a look at the positions of the stars of each participant at the moment of their birth, in order to generate a specific link with those particular stars.
We will talk about the tradition around the fixed stars in astrology and its application in contemporary readings, introducing you to the different authors and interpretation techniques around the subject.
Each group will be organized according to the affinity of interests and proposals, in addition to the language spoken by the participants. There will be groups in English and Spanish.
Place & Rates EGYPT
The residency is located in a fascinating glamping site in the Sahara desert, a very diverse area in southwest of Cairo, approximately four hours from the airport (CAI). Between the white desert and the black desert, in a national park area, ideal territory for the darkness of the sky without light pollution.
Residents may arrive at Cairo Airport (CAI). Upon arrival, they will be provided with a private shuttle service from the airport to our first stop in Giza, which offers an incredible view. We will spend the first night there. Early the next morning, a local guide will be ready to accompany the group on a visit to the pyramids and the Sphinx. After lunch, we will head to the desert in the afternoon for an adventure under the deep sky.
We will spend the nights observing and studying the deep sky in the Sahara, with all its diversity. Towards the adventure of the stars in the deep sky. Being nourished by the best Bedouin cuisine.
Dates first week: 28th of October to 4th of November.
The program has a cost that includes all expenses for meals, transfers to the desert by car and lodging. As well as the evening class program.
The goal is that the residents don’t have to worry about anything during their stay. Rates are also in relation to retreats in the area, taking care of every detail and offering the best price.

PEJA CULTURE PAVILION
The city center of Peja, Kosovo, hosts a historically significant site that has long been a focal point for community gatherings and social interactions. Rich in cultural and recreational elements, this central location, originally designed for leisure and relaxation, has been an integral part of the urban landscape. One of its most notable features is an ancient water source dating back to the 15th century, which remains under the protection of the Ministry of Culture of Kosovo. Despite its historical and cultural importance, the site has been neglected for years, falling into disrepair and disuse. The Peja Culture Pavilion competition aims to revitalize this area, transforming it into a vibrant public hotspot.

The city is one of the oldest in Kosovo, with a history that dates back to ancient times. Peja is home to numerous historical landmarks, including the Patriarchate of Peć, a medieval Serbian Orthodox monastery that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This site, along with others in the region, underscores Peja’s historical significance and its role as a cultural crossroads in the Balkans.
The Peja Culture Pavilion competition is spearheaded by Collective Action for Culture in partnership with the Ministry of Culture of Kosovo and the Municipality of Peja. Collective Action for Culture is known for organizing Rrugë Fest, a cultural initiative that rejuvenates urban spaces through artistic expression and community involvement. With the support from these partners, the organization aims to empower artists, engage residents, and transform neglected areas into lively cultural destinations.
Situated in the heart of Peja, Kosovo, the competition site is a historically significant area centrally located in the city. The site is characterized by its rich historical context, enveloped by the vibrant urban fabric of Peja. Despite its historical and cultural importance, the site has been neglected for years, falling into disrepair and disuse. The Peja Culture Pavilion competition aims to revitalize this area, transforming it into a vibrant public hotspot.
The focal point of the Peja Culture Pavilion competition is the ancient 15th-century water fountain, a historically significant artifact reflecting Peja's long and storied past. This water fountain, preserved over centuries, serves as a vital cultural and historical landmark. Participants are encouraged to propose new designs that integrate and celebrate this water fountain, making it a central and vital part of their overall design proposals.
There are no specific site restrictions for the Peja Culture Pavilion competition; however, the position of the 15th-century water fountain must be respected. Participants are free to propose any design for the fountain as long as it is preserved and integrated into the overall design.
The competition seeks innovative ideas to transform the site into a lively participatory public area. The primary objective is to design a flexible multipurpose pavilion and an engaging outdoor space that revitalizes the area. The pavilion should serve as a cultural center that not only integrates the 15th-century water fountain but also enhances its historical importance. The pavilion should provide a versatile environment for social events, art activities, and community gatherings. Additionally, the outdoor space should be designed to become a vibrant public hotspot, fostering social interactions and cultural engagement.
Design proposals should balance contemporary architectural advancements with historical conservation, emphasizing the water fountain's historical significance. Proposals should utilize environment-friendly materials and sustainable construction methods, ensuring the site honors its past while embracing modern needs.
Through this competition, the organizers aim to breathe new life into this historically rich site, making it a central point of community activity and cultural pride once again. The revitalized area will honor its historical roots, particularly the ancient water fountain, while paving the way for a vibrant and sustainable future.
