Banff Visual Arts: Sounding Like a Mountain
This thematic residency at Banff Centre invites visual artists to apply with projects that explore how places "sing," how memory lives on in vibrations, and how listening to the landscape can change ethical and political relations.
Based on acoustic ecology and the mountains around Banff, participants explore how sound holds multiple time layers – shaped by land use, migration, ecological disturbances and colonial structures. The earth is understood as a field of relations where biological, geological and social processes create each other.
The faculty consists of curator and writer Xenia Benivolski (Belgium/Canada), artist Elina Waage Mikalsen (Sápmi/Norway) and geographer Kathryn Yusoff (England). Participants receive spacious studios, access to Banff's technical facilities and a supportive artistic environment.
