A festival app without an app store

A festival app of your own has long been something only the big festivals could afford, because apps in the App Store and Google Play are expensive to build and maintain. Vangen is a web app. It opens from a link, can be added to the home screen and updates as soon as you change something in the panel.

What the audience gets

Programme by day and stage

The audience browses the programme day by day and filters by stage. During the festival, the front page shows what is on now and what comes next.

My plan

Star the concerts you want to see and get a notification 15 minutes before they start. If a programme item moves, the reminder follows the new time.

News with push

Write a news item in the panel and send it as a notification to everyone who has turned notifications on. It can be scheduled for a set time.

Map and directions

Enter the address, and the audience gets a map and directions in the app.

Practical info

Sections for opening hours, cloakroom, parking and questions and answers.

Norwegian and English

Menus and buttons are available in Norwegian and English. International guests tap “English”.

Ready for next year

When the festival is over, you start a new season. The app, the address and everyone who turned on notifications carry over.

How the audience adds the app to the home screen

  1. iPhone: open the link in Safari, tap the Share button and choose “Add to Home Screen”.
  2. Android: open the link in Chrome and choose “Install app” or “Add to Home screen” in the menu.
  3. Turn on notifications in the app to get news and reminders about favourites.

Your look

You upload the icon and choose a background colour and an accent colour, so the app looks like your festival. At the bottom it says “Made with Kulturella”.

Questions and answers

How is Vangen different from a regular festival app?

A regular app has to be built, published in the App Store and Google Play, and downloaded. Vangen is a web app: the audience opens a link and can add the app to the home screen. You update everything in a panel on Kulturella.

Do push notifications work on iPhone?

Yes, once the app has been added to the home screen. That is Apple’s rule for web apps, and it applies from iOS 16.4. On Android, notifications also work straight from the browser.

Can the programme change during the festival?

Yes. Changes appear the next time the audience opens the app, and anyone who starred an item that moves gets the reminder at the new time.

Does it work for concerts, conferences and fairs too?

Yes. Vangen suits any event with a programme, whether it lasts one evening or a whole week.

What does it cost?

Vangen is included in the organisation membership on Kulturella. Clubs and associations pay from NOK 75 per month (NOK 900 billed yearly), public bodies from NOK 167 per month (NOK 1,999 billed yearly) and businesses from NOK 199 per month (billed monthly). Temporary crew for the event days is an event add-on of NOK 1,500 per event. If your organisation starts a paid membership before 1 April 2027, the event add-on is free until 30 September 2027 – the whole festival season. The offer applies to paid memberships, not free trials.
